Information Gathering: Research

Research is used for various different purposes, it is used to confirm and establish facts and truths, as well as solve new and existing problems and theories. When developing a project, relevant and timely information is crucial to become more knowledgeable in your specific professional area. By obtaining information about a specific subject or field helps to keep yourself more informed within your industry. (COMM11003 2015)

Where to Research

There are many places to find the efficient and effective information you require. The internet has become an increasingly popular place to find information that meets your research needs. Through the increasing growth of the internet we can access almost anything at the tips of our fingers. However, with this mass amount of information available it can be quite difficult to sift through what is useful and relevant. The library database is another primary source to find information. Many different sources can be located in this database such as journals, articles, books, and much other materials.(Sieber, 2008)

Conducting research and gathering information is an important skill to acquire in order to be more successful within your profession. Below is a video that will give further information into the study design of different research methods.

Technologies in Today’s Society

Our daily lives are constantly being influenced by new and improved technologies. This new generation of teenagers/young adults have been greatly influenced by the immense amount of communication technologies that are available. Cellphones, emails, and Internet based social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram are just a few of the many methods of communication technologies.

Benefits of Communication Technologies

These networking sites allow people to share and communicate with family and friends as well as reconnect with long distance relatives and loved ones who we have lost contact with over the years. Through the use of these technologies keeping in contact with people has become much more simpler and easier.(Zorzini,2013)

Negative Effects of Communication Technology

1. Increased Bullying

Cyber bullying has become increasingly popular with the rise of the Internet and technology. Bullying has risen to another level making it much easier to harass and bully through these devices. Kids are no longer able to flee to the safety of their own home.(Hosale, 2013)

2. Loss of Human Connection

Communication Technology is made to connect people, however in some cases it has caused a loss of social bonds between people. Most find social media to be a distraction from the real world, friends are no longer having face-to-face conversations and thus isolating ourselves with our technology.(Hosale, 2013)

Here is a short video demonstrating how technology has caused a loss of human interaction.

3. Inappropriate content

Through the Internet an excessive amount of inappropriate content can be accessed by the click of a button. These Technologies have caused great concerns with how much exposure children have to negative and inappropriate content.Children are now more likely to access pornography at an early age, poisoning the minds of young people with what is seemed acceptable to watch and do.(Schafer, 2012)

Just like most things in life, there are both negative and positive aspects to communicating through technology. Social network can be a very useful tool to help people connect with one another, however it can also be used to hurt many people and their lives.

Know Your Audience

To be successful when communicating, it is very important to recognize who your target audience is. Through stepping into the mind of the audience you can adjust your message around the needs and requirements of those you wish to communicate with. By understanding things from their perspective you create a link between an audience and the speaker. Thill and Bovee (2013, p. 9) talk about a great skill to acquire is the ability to recognize, understand and respect the wishes and needs of each member of the audience. Ricky (2012) states that to keep your audience interested and engaged your topic needs to contain the right amount of information with the correct tone to avoid speaking gaffes. Basic information should not be presented to a highly educated audience just as a novice audience should not be spoken to with knowledge too high to understand. Through understanding this helps for communication to be received more clearly and effectively.

Communication affects various relationships in many different settings of our lives. The way we communicate can vary from different relationships with various people. There is a great difference between the way we communicate with our family members compared to our work colleagues, managers and supervisors. Exchanging information with family members is the most comfortable and in my belief the most important communicational environment of all. Through understanding peoples emotions and intentions behind information the message can be easily understood exactly the way it was intended. The workplace is a team environment and communication should be influenced accordingly. Robinson, L et al. (2015) in their studies have found that communication is the glue that improves connections with others thus improving teamwork and decision making. Actively listening and adapting to the different views and personalities of your work peers will help in avoiding unnecessary misunderstandings.
